Gratitude Grows the Heart

SIX (or more) REASONS SAYING GRACE AT MEALTIME GROWS YOUR HEART

 1. In spite of all that feels not-right-with-the-planet, we are blessed.  We have much to be thankful for.  Expressing our thanks tunes us in to ~ and contributes to ~ the energy of love in the world.  This feels good!

2. Expressing thanks brings us into the present moment.  We are not rehashing the past, or fretting about the future, we are simply resting into the here and now, and noticing the blessings all around us.

“Life that gives us Life, we thank you!”

3. In gratitude, we are expressing our appreciation and our awareness of life’s goodness, of love, oneness, and other feelings of blessedness and belonging.  The more we practice gratitude, the more it opens our lives in beautiful and expansive ways.

4. Saying grace at mealtimes helps us to cultivate a gratitude habit or practice, and reminds us that we have the power to invoke a moment of stillness and reflection, invitation and re-attunement into our lives at any time.  It doesn’t matter where we are, or what we are doing: pausing to express our gratitude at any time of the day produces a window of grace, a grace-note, and a new light.

        Here is a lovely passage by G.K. Chesterton,

“You say grace before meals. All right.
But I say grace before the concert and the opera,
and grace before the play and the pantomime,
and grace before I open a book, and grace before sketching,
painting, swimming, fencing, boxing, walking, playing, dancing,
and grace before I dip the pen into the ink.”

 5. Gratitude nourishes us.  Giving thanks, even in the midst of difficult times, can restore hope and the possibility of healing.  Every life has its stresses. Yes: Every life.  Stresses don’t diminish the daily blessings, though they may inhibit our awareness of them.  Expressing gratitude draws life to us, lifts the spirit and strengthens the heart, giving us greater courage and resilience.  Gratitude re-affirms a trust in life- to acknowledge that we can not accomplish everything alone- that we humbly rely on (and are thankful to) a power much greater than we are.

 6.  Expressing gratitude draws fresh energy into our body, re-attuning us to Life’s goodness.  Gratitude refreshes our spirit, awakens our awareness and softens our complaints.  Gratitude warms our hearts and opens our minds to greater possibilities.  Gratitude humbles, lifts, and fills us. 

 With gratitude we bless our meals, heightening our appreciation for the gifts before us.  The lovely thing about gratitude is that we can practice it at any time, and when we remember to do so, life itself is all the more delicious.
