Excerpts from Conversing With The Holy

Joseph Campbell said, "In choosing your God, you choose your way of looking at the universe. There are plenty of Gods. Choose yours. The god you worship is the god you deserve."

Meister Eckhart said, "God is voluptuous and delicious."

Ingrid Goff-Maidoff embraces both of these sentiments in her chapbook of spiritual poetry and prayer.

Sunrise
the world shifts sweetly open
I turn to lift
from my dream
of You
unending midnight
star fields
trackless blue…

 I have felt Your fullness
light inside the body
have swum in Your deep waters
breathed in Your holy breath

my mind echoes with the sound
a thousand hymns unwritten
choirs at full crescendo
and then
shy laughter too
the spring warbler in the holly
the brook in the maple woods

 unleash the bird in my heart
to sing through the nectar hours
untie the falcon at my wrist
to draw
the honey
down.

Infinite Beloved,
I do wish when I speak without listening,
You would more often interrupt.
When I chatter, Lord, please kiss me.
When I worry, blow in my ear.
If I gossip, hold Your Finger to my lips.
In fear, press Your Heart to mine.
When I distract myself with trifles,
Remind me Who You Are.
Please use Your Ways
To slip in from the edge;
Startle me into presence;
Lift me from myself.
